Luke Chapter 3 starts about 30 years after the birth of Christ which was mentioned in chapter 2. This chapter deals with the preparation for Christ's ministry through the ministry of John the Baptist.
1. Identify as much as we know about the people mentioned in Luke 3:1-2? Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate, Herod, Philip, Lysanias, Annas and Caiaphas. What significance, if any did they have in the life of Jesus?
2. Analyze Isaiah's prophecy in verse 4.
3. What is repentance?
4. Interpret Luke 3:7-9. What is John saying and to whom is he saying it?
5. How does the crowd's response in verse 10 indicate how they interpreted John's message?
6. How does John's response to the crowd in verse 11 compare to the message of Jesus and His disciples? What about the response to the tax collectors in verse 13? The soldiers in verse 14?
7. What did the soldiers' contentment with their salary have to do with anything? How might this concept apply to us today?
8. What is the general message conveyed by John in these responses?
9. Why would the people think that John was the "Christ"?
10. Examine and explain Luke 3:17
11. When Luke describes the Genealogy of Jesus, why does he not stop at Abraham? What would have been the significance if he had stopped at Abraham?
